Blog Updates for May 2012

May 26, 2012. In USPSTF Draft Report we added: Based on a survey of primary care physicians [PMID: 22517310] [Science News] it seems that the USPSTF guidelines are not having much effect on practice.

May 26, 2012. In USPSTF Draft Report we added: It is believed that the USPSTF decision is part of a broader trend toward fewer screenings for any disease in healthy people. See [USA Today] .

May 26, 2012. In USPSTF Draft Report we added: Readers may also wish to review the PSA Test Consent forms by [Dr. Chodak] and [Ralph Valle (patient)].

May 19, 2012. On the Case Histories page we added http://www.myprostate.eu site which lists many case histories.

May 8, 2012. We added to Bradford Hill Criteria of Causation: A study of 34,000 adults found that those who were the most satisfied with their health care had a 26% higher mortality rate than those least satisfied. [Health News Review] [PMID: 22331982] Perhaps dissatisfaction leads patients to better pursue appropriate treatment or perhaps over-treatment results in poorer health outcomes but higher satisfaction. To dig deeper we would need to know more.

May 6, 2012. In Biochemical PSA Recurrence we added: CAPE from Honey Bee Propolis. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester, or CAPE, derived from propolis (used by honey bees to construct their hive) arrests the growth of prostate cancer cells in a mouse model. Note that there are many treatments that seem to work in mouse models that fail in humans so this only provides only weak evidence.
